Community Interpreting

Public service interpreting is often known as community or liaison interpreting. It covers a broad spectrum of situations, but some of the more common ones include: healthcare, local government, housing, social and welfare.

Typically the interpreter will enable communication between a non-native speaker and someone in their local community, for example a doctor or housing inspector. The interpreter will have to interpret each individual statement and clarity and accuracy is vital, as each speaker must be able to get their point across correctly - their health and welfare could depend upon the correct information being imparted. In some extreme cases, the interpreter can even deal with matters of life and death, such as medical emergencies or asylum applications.

For a public service interpreter, an understanding of more than just the linguistic is paramount. They must really have a feel for the culture and traditions of each speaker. They must also be conscientious and sympathetic and willing to listen. Perhaps most importantly of all they must be discreet and ensure total confidentiality for all parties concerned.

In the UK, public service interpreters have often obtained the Diploma for Public Service Interpreting (or DPSI) provided by the Chartered Institute of Linguists. The DPSI is available with four distinct specialisms: English Law, Scottish Law, Local Government and Health. It is a guarantee of professionalism and quality and proves that the interpreter has been tested in interpreting, sight translation and written translation. In addition, the choice of speicalisms ensures that the interpreter will be appropriate for the task, regardless of what issues he/she is confronted with.
